April 22nd
Event: Earth Day
Type: Online
Location: Mulvane Art Museum
Earth Day 2021 in partnership with the Kid’s Art Lab at the Mulvane Art Museum was held online due to COVID Concerns. We were certainly sad to not engage directly with families, especially the children. However look at the FB event page we co-created: https://www.facebook.com/events/758385284783810/?active_tab=discussion
Jane Hanni, Kid’s Art Lab curator, created a lovely event on YouTube titled, “Whispers for Earth Day '' and other hands-on, nature with thought provoking crafts. Our Tonantzin Society released our collaborative digital coloring book, ‘We Are the Keepers” that encouraged children to be familiar with the Kansas River and to be good stewards. The book was illustrated by Native American artist Mona Cliff. Additional co-sponsors of the coloring book were the City of Topeka Sustainability Committee and Climate & Energy Project. We LOVE Earth Day!

We were so happy to be a part of the first Topeka Family & Friends Juneteenth Celebration, Inc. We had volunteers and Tonantzin Society family members involved and as we walked the parade route we gave out copies of “We Are the Keepers” coloring book to help more people realize the importance of water in ALL our lives!
Co-sponsor of Oakland Community Gardens. The Society was one of several sponsors for a new community garden in the Oakland area of Topeka. The garden is all volunteer and is nestled in a low to moderate income neighborhood. The garden shares produce with neighbors, senior centers in the area too.
