Mendez v. Westminster Mural & Chicano Poet Francisco Alarcon
Scott Dual Language Magnet School

Once again, partnering with USD 501 Scott Dual Language Magnet School and their summer school students, two murals were created.  Our lead artist was Tonantzin Society artistic director, Wicho Ramirez.

Students focused on a hallway mural that taught the history of the landmark California case, Mendez v. Westminster.  The seminal 1947 case was the first in the nation to successfully pave the way for school desegregation as Mexican families came together to fight the forced segregation put upon their children and won. The case was pivotal to the later success of Brown v. Board of Education.

The 2nd mural at the Dual Language School paid homage to the vibrant Xicano poet, Francisco Alarcon and the poets love of his cultural roots.  The mural is on display at in the school’s library. Wicho Ramirez, with Tonantzin Society is credited with this artistic gift to the school children.
