What more can you ask for than a fun Cinco de Mayo celebration AND a First Friday Artwalk?

Several months ago, the Tonantzin Society met with staff and principal, Sarah Lucero to come up with an educational and artistic after school program for the students at Scott Dual Language Magnet School. Topeka’s only bi-lingual school, Scott is focused on providing students with English and Spanish language skills, a quality education and includes appreciation for Latino culture and all cultures.

Everyone involved was excited about the numerous possibilities and to bring the real history of Cinco de Mayo forward. The idea was brought forth to have students create a 5 panel portable mural while taught the holiday’s historic significance. Once completed the school’s will participate in their first ever First Friday Artwalk.

Workshops started on March 26 and will conclude on April 23.  Other classes at Scott will be creating piñatas and other decorations.  The PAW PTO parents are also involved.  On May 2 – the Cinco de Mayo celebration and First Friday will all come together in a family and community event at the school!  Food will be sold, the mural displayed, dance performances and much more.

The Society is proud to be a part of this cultural learning experience that adds the vital component of art.  Make sure and check out the ARTSConnect website, map and FB page for more information!
